Bad Sounds – the band formed by Wiltshire-based brothers Ewan and Callum Merrett – release their debut album ‘Get Better’ on 17th August on Insanity Records. This sonic self-help manual exploring death, anxiety, friendship and more is a guide to not just getting through life, but living it to the max.

The brothers started on different musical paths before the band was born, Ewan was keen on making hip-hop beats and playing with samples, Callum was more engrossed in the soul, pop and R’n’B of Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye and Curtis mayfield. Combining Ewan and Callum’s differing styles, they come together create the colorful and unique world that is Bad Sounds.

“A group that stands above the rest… carving out their very own space in the often-saturated music industry.”
    Wonderland

“Zippy pop bang with a gently psychedelic side”
    The Guardian

"Bad Sounds are one of the most exciting new groups in the country; a band whose myriad fresh sounds are matched by a stunning, creative, highly imaginative live show."

The Regrettes have been tearing up the LA club scene playing with Kate Nash, Peaches, Bleached, Deap Vally, PINS, La Luz and Summer Twins leaving L.A.'s jaded rock critics to write such things as "Everybody was floored by The Regrettes—the new poster children for local teen garage rock." and "The Regrettes rocked with a ferocity and penchant for hooks that schools most indie rockers twice their age. They will surely run an empire in ten years tops."

Easy Life are a Leicester five-piece whose early material explores that push and pull between the promise of a simpler existence, and the hedonism or temptations which occasionally threaten to get in the way. Singer and front-man Murray first met the band’s bassist and sax player, Sam, at school in the Midlands, where they bonded over a mutual love of early hip-hop, funk and jazz. Having signed up the rest of the band on the local scene, they soon began to write songs as Easy Life, mixing these more transatlantic influences with elements of indie, punk, and the less-exotic realities of rainy middle England.

If contemplative singer songwriters are your taste, you will fall head over heels in love with George Glew. The easy comparison might be someone like early Ed Sheeran or Rag’n’Bone Man, but Bristol based Glew has his own style. Championed by Elton John on his popular Apple Beats1 show and fresh from having gone viral on the Spotify Charts; George Glew is here with vocals to give you chills.

Fate was smiling upon Sub Pop the day Kyle Craft arrived at the Seattle offices. Fate was smiling upon Sub Pop, not Kyle Craft. Kyle Craft just happened to be there. Now at the age of 28, the Louisiana-originating troubadour is a little wiser to things, but back then he only knew Sub Pop for its links with Nirvana and as the home of Beach House and Fleet Foxes. He's really not sure that he ever thought of a so-called 'career in music'. “The whole music thing has been a really strange cinematic sort of journey for me,” he laughs affably. “None of it really makes sense on paper.”

On paper, he was the grandson of a bluegrass player who spent a childhood in Louisiana going to Baptist church and sneaking into the choir room to play with the piano. “The piano was this little weird magic box,” he says. “It was a toy for me at the time.” His mother bought him a guitar on the sworn oath by Craft that he'd get lessons. He soon broke his promise. One lesson in and he hated learning, but he made a pact with his mom that he would teach himself. So he did. He would learn all his inspirations' catalogues: David Bowie, Bob Dylan, The Beatles. He discovered Bowie by “pure luck” while watching 'Labyrinth' on TV and falling head over heels for the soundtrack. Getting to Dylan was when everything changed for him, though. “When I was 14 I was into Aerosmith. Steven Tyler was into John Lennon. So I heard Lennon before I heard The Beatles. I read that Lennon was into this Bob Dylan guy and when I heard him I thought: 'Oh that's my guy.'” And just like that, he started writing his own material.

  • LION

    LION

    Pop Rock

The first time Beth Lowen sang in public, a woman she didn’t know approached her. “You sound like you’ve smoked 20 cigarettes,” she told her, “and drunk a bottle of whisky.” Given that Beth was 10-years-old and thus, unsurprisingly, had done nothing of the sort, she started to cry. “I thought that was a bad thing,” she recalls, laughing. “And my parents were like, ‘No, no! That’s good!”

Nowadays, Lowen embraces the ferocious, Janis Joplin-esque rasp of her voice. In fact, it’s one of the reasons she chose to adopt the name Lion. “Someone said I sound like a lion,” she explains, “Also, everyone says I have lion hair, and ‘Löwen’ means lions in German.” Still, declaring herself deserving of such a fierce moniker wasn’t something that came easily. “I didn’t mention it to anybody for months,” she admits. “It’s a big statement, it’s pretty extreme. But I was looking at people like Lorde, and I was like, that’s fucking cool. And then I was like, fuck it. So now it’s Lion.” The stage name never feels more apt than it does when Lion performs live. Her husky but powerful voice, already so potent on record, is unleashed to its full, roaring potential, as she jitters a little behind the mic, bathed in red light.

Lowen doesn’t make music than can be easily compared or categorised. Each song differs from the next – though there’s one thing she hopes they all manage to achieve. “I hope people feel something,” she says, “like I do when I’m playing it. Take what you want from it, but feel. I want to make boys cry.”

Men I Trust is Dragos, Jessy and Emma.

Founded in 2014, Men I Trust (menitrust.com), is an indie band from Montreal (Canada) who loves smooth sounds, calm melodies and simple rhythms that relax, but make your right foot tap and your chin bounce on the beats. They record, mix, master and shoot their music videos.

Men I Trust is doing well online, with more than 30 mentions on Hype Machine (including several top 5 positions) and 6 million streams on Spotify, SoundCloud and YouTube. 2016-2017 concerts: Osheaga, Canadian Music Week (Toronto), Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, the Festival d’été de Québec, M for Montreal, Pop Montreal, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Beijing. In 2017, Men I Trust’s “Lauren” is SubmitHub’s all time no1 song and several other songs are on many Hypeddit top 5 charts, on daily basis. In spring 2017, the band launched and sold out it’s first vinyl album and released a single (You Deserve This) on Adult Swim’s LUXE Playlist. The single “Tailwhip” followed in September. It reached 2M plays on Spotify in less than two months and got named no1 song of 2017 by Gorilla Vs Bear.

    Our Girl

    Alternative Rock

Our Girl have been wowing a growing army of listeners ever since their debut gig supporting Honeyblood in September 2014. It was during that fledging performance that singer/guitarist Soph Nathan realised that, of the five bands she was then playing in, Our Girl was the perfect home for her redoubtable songwriting.

The product of a thriving Brighton scene that includes The Magic Gang, Dream Wife and Abattoir Blues, the band are capable of switching from stark tenderness to pulverising noise in a flash. Nathan's honest, personal lyrics float in a delicious array of sounds: rhythmic drum and guitar hooks make dynamic jumps to thick garage-rock riffs, then suddenly cut to beautiful, intimate moments of lone guitar and reverb-hugged vocals.

Puma Blue is the alias of South Londoner Jacob Allen, who has been delicately honing his purposefully paradoxical sound, blending downtown jazz sax lines with J Dilla grooves and a heart-wrenching vocal akin to Jeff Buckley, Chet Baker and Billie Holliday. This blend is completed by Allen’s punk-inspired grit and the ferocity of his live performances, backed by a four-piece band, spewing out tortured love songs and sensual rhythms topped by his haunting falsetto vocals.
