One of the highlight of this year’s London Jazz Festival 2019, we present one of Brazil’s true musical legends this weekend.

João Donato is a major figure from the early days of the bossa nova movement. Having influenced the mighty João Gilberto with his piano-playing, he went on to kick-start the Latin jazz movement alongside Eddie Palmieri and Cal Tjader. Across his 53 years of music-making he’s recorded and played alongside the likes of Ray Barretto, Astrid Gilberto, Airto Moreira, Gilberto Gil and Tito Puente, going on to influence each generation of Brazilian musicians since.

His distinct yet instantly recognisable style marks him out as a true pioneer, with beautiful melodies and a sweet tooth for funky ideas. Alongside members of the incredible fusion powerhouse Bixiga 70, this is set to be a historic night of Brazilian groove music from one of the last living legends of Brazil’s finest musical generation.

Contemporary jazz guitarist and composer Peter Wilson opens the show with his quartet.
