The Great Escape is home to some of the world’s best new music showcases, debuting artists and springing them forward on a path of success. The Spotlight shows play host to artists who have grown alongside the festival who are now taking their own international lead across the charts. Lewis Capaldi has been revealed as the first Spotlight show for 2019, taking place at Brighton’s Dome and presented by The Great Escape and The Box Plus Network.

It’s been a whirlwind year for vocal powerhouse Lewis Capaldi, who performed at The Great Escape as a rising star in May 2018. Following self-released single ‘Bruises’ which rapidly reached over 25 million streams on Spotify claiming the most-ever plays from an unsigned artist – Capaldi has yet to stop impressing the world, receiving a prestigious nomination for BRIT’s Critic Choice. Clash comment that “he seems able to find the beauty in the everyday, to translate deeply personal experiences into something universal.

Capaldi said, “Absolutely over the moon to come back and play The Great Escape this year! Had an amazing show last time and hopefully things will be the same this time around!

Matt Rennie, MD of the The Box Plus Network said, “Having worked with The Great Escape for a few years now, it’s safe to say that it’s become one of our annual editorial highlights and a great opportunity to take our new music brand, Box Fresh to the fans. To work with a festival who are dedicated to new artists is refreshing, relevant and rewarding. The fact we have someone with as much talent as Lewis on the spotlight stage at The Great Escape, along with all the other amazing artists there, is testament to the vibrancy of UK industry right now!”

When Lewis Capaldi’s debut single Bruises exploded in mid-2017 it seemed from an outside perspective to have all the hallmarks of an overnight sensation. How could this 20-year-old with a soul-wrenching voice that sounded like it had been hewn from granite seemingly emerge from nowhere with a song of such emotional depth? A stripped-back and almost painfully raw meditation on love and loss from a writer who seemed like he’d already lived several lives and had the scars to prove it, within weeks it had racked up an astonishing 20 million Spotify plays and topped streaming charts around the world.

19-year-old Kara Marni has been infatuated with music for as long as she can remember. With her adolescent years being soundtracked by classic soul artists, it was on the school run while hearing her mum playing Minnie Riperton’s Loving You that her interest in music was fully realised. From that moment Marni spent hours listening to the track, hoping one day to mimic the iconic whistle register with which Riperton is synonymous with.

Fast-forward to her teen years and she’s set up camp in a shed at the bottom of her garden. It was here that Marni nurtured her voice by attempting to imitate the likes of soul icons Roberta Flack and Anita Baker. This influence of soul icons alongside her appreciation for contemporary greats including Amy Winehouse and Lauryn Hill, has inspired her to develop her own incredible vocal talent.

Self-described as “soul with a sprinkling of pop,” Marni has a voice beyond her years, with soaring, vocals and a distinct sound that sets her firmly in her own lane.
