Routestock and Sound UK present turntablist and sound artist NikNak, in an immersive event exploring her vision of Afrofuturism - the narrative of a young black woman realising her potential and superhuman abilities.
NikNak regularly redefines and expands upon her role as a ground-breaking multidisciplinary artist. Her debut album Bashi received acclaim from Resident Advisor, listed as one of their Best Albums of January 2021 as well as airplay on BBC Radio 3, Worldwide FM and Threads Radio.
Previously mentored by Shiva Feshareki, Anna Meredith and Supriya Nagaranjan, NikNak became the first Black Turntablist in history to win the illustrious Oram Award in 2020, has been featured in well renowned publications such as Mixmag, Resident Advisor, Yorkshire Evening Post, Electronic Sound Mag, and DJ Mag, and received support from Arts Council, Brighter Sound, Launchpad, Sound UK, Sound and Music, and PRS Foundation.
NikNak and audio-visual artist Loepa combine a treasure trove of pre-created sound and visuals which are transformed in the venue, with live scratching, interplay between visuals and audio, and the movement of sound around the audience within The Hot Tin’s surround sound system.
NikNak is our guide, the central character sharing the screen with images of her childhood superhero, Storm (NikNak has a tattoo of Storm), the visuals combine illustration, manipulated live film footage and references to comic book imagery.
An invitation to watch and listen as the turntables, sound and story swirl and surround you within the walls of The Hot Tin.
