Summer 2018 has truly been one to remember for St Albans trio Friendly Fires. The band - comprised of Ed Macfarlane, Edd Gibson and Jack Savidge - returned to the recorded music and live arenas this year following a hiatus, to remind us all exactly why we fell in love with them in the first place. First came the anthemic, Mark Ralph-produced, Radio 1 playlisted comeback single 'Love Like Waves', which was met with widespread acclaim. Then launching into a summer of high profile festival appearances (not to mention a sold out headline show at London's legendary, 5000 capacity Brixton Academy), Friendly Fires would go on to headline some of the UK's best loved festivals - including Festival No 6, Lost Village and Truck Festival - in addition to show-stealing performances if front of hundreds of thousands of fans around the world.

    Slowthai

    Hip-Hop/Rap

Northampton born and bred, slowthai is the rapper speaking out for a generation of kids who’ve been ignored for too long by the powers that be.

His lyrics are cut through with a rawness and unflinching honesty that has the listener hanging on every elongated word (the slowthai moniker comes from a childhood nickname, born out of friends commenting on his slow, drawled speech). He speaks directly to a generation of kids swinging between anger and apathy at the unsettled times they’ve found themselves born into.

His music is unmistakably British, treading a line between grime, rap, dubstep and garage – riding rough-edged beats with an adolescent charisma and confidence that recalls buzzy pirate radio sessions and handicam freestyles. All of this is encapsulated by live shows that are drenched in sweat and spit and booming with the sound of slowthai’s hooky flows and street-smart bars being chanted back at him.

  • Auntie Flo

    Auntie Flo

    Dance/Electronic

One of the most truly original production talents of recent times, Auntie Flo offers a gateway to lesser-known strands of music that need exploring.

Auntie Flo has become a central figure in the ‘new strand of club music fusing electronic and world influences alongside the likes of Daphni, Four Tet, Romare, Sinkane and John Wizards’ (Joe Muggs, The Wire, 2013). Originally from Glasgow but now residing in London, he has been travelled the world extensively pushing his unique ‘Afro-futurist’ sound either with the Auntie Flo live show or solo as a DJ.

    Ezra Collective

    Jazz

Synergy in motion, London five-piece Ezra Collective are proving themselves as a harmonious tour de force. Their sound nods respectfully to a classic jazz footprint, celebrating the originators whilst simultaneously carving a path solely their own. Ezra Collective marry the delicate technicalities of jazz musicianship with afrobeat and hip hop, tied together by a sound that’s unmistakably London. Their live show is one of dynamic union; the strength of their partnership shines in performances that are commanding yet sensitive, soulful and pertinently groove-laced. Following a joyous and stunningly cohesive show in May 2016, Boiler Room rightly labelled the group as “pioneering the new-wave of U.K. jazz”. As the genre enjoys a new lease of life that is gaining momentum across the country, Ezra Collective are adding their own fresh and imaginative face to a style that continues to be “as entertaining as it is educational” (Trench). In a year that saw them sell out legendary London venue Ronnie Scott’s not once but twice, 2017 also brought with it the release of their genre-bending second EP, Juan Pablo: The Philosopher. After Ezra Collective took the EP on a successful tour across the U.K and Europe and completely sold out of the vinyl, Juan Pablo: The Philosopher went on to win the accolade of Best Jazz Album at Gilles Peterson’s esteemed Worldwide Awards in January 2018. Ezra Collective is: Femi Koleoso - Drums TJ Koleoso - Bass Joe Armon Jones - Keys Dylan Jones - Trumpet James Mollison - Saxophone
