After the great success of the first of our new series Paul Sexton Presents, hosted by the SL patron and music journalist-broadcaster, we’re excited to reveal the line-up
for the second of these convivial monthly evenings on Wednesday, July 28. A lovely atmosphere is guaranteed with the combined talents of American-British trio My Girl The River and UK Americana singer-songwriter Anne Howie.

My Girl The River, fronted by Kris Wilkinson Hughes, will be playing their brand new single ‘It’s Gonna Be Alright,’ the recent ’Sad Dog’ and tracks from their hugely admired 2020 album ‘Cardinal In The Snow.’

Anna will perform music from her EP ‘An Idiot’s Guide To Love,’ recorded in Nashville, and will preview some of the album she’s been making with Lukas Drinkwater, who himself will be at the Sound Lounge on October 8 as part of the duo Jacob & Drinkwater.

Paul Sexton Presents - My Girl The River + Anna Howie

  • My Girl The River

    My Girl The River

    Country

Created by Kris Wilkinson Hughes, My Girl The River was born out of a song. 'The Last Song' was the first song written for this americana, alt country, folk and roots project. Kris, hailing from Louisiana (and having lived in Jackson, MS and Nashville, TN) and English bassist Joe Hughes, have created a gorgeous collection of songs. As one fan responded 'it's like a delicately passionate love letter to the American South, soulfully crafted into something really special. Kris  has a voice like sugared espresso, low and evocative with a sweet aftertaste and her eloquently confessional lyrics hit you right in the heart.'

Along with some astonishingly gifted musicians (Jonathan Byrd, Will Kimbrough, Nick Pynn, Max Milligan, Kristin Wilkinson, Jacob Chano Lundby, John Garden and Tom Moth) they are very pleased to offer up their debut album 'This Ain't No Fairytale'. Described as 'stunning', it is mainly inspired by Kris' upbringing in the American Deep South, bringing to life anecdotes, half-truths, white lies and fables. Ranging from alt-country and folk to Americana and roots, it ticks every box. It was recorded in the front room of Kris and Joe's house in November 2015 and mixed by John Garden, produced by Kris, mastered by Mick Conley (Suzy Bogguss, Kathy Mattea, Marty Stuart), with art direction by James Marsh (Talk Talk).

  • Anna Howie

    Anna Howie

    Singer-Songwriter

Anna Howie tells upbeat stories of love and loss and friendship through her own brand of Americana meets London . Her latest EP 'An Idiot's Guide to Love' was recorded in Nashville and went to number 5 in the Uk Country Album Chart. She has just finished recording her next album with Lukas Drinkwater at Polyphonic Studios and is excited for its release in February.

'Anna's voice is the perfect foil for her lyrics, blending a light sweetness with a bit of gravel. Think somewhere between the darker tones of Roseanne Cash and the airiness of early Joni Mitchell.'  Fatea Magazine

A beguiling combination of intelligent songwriting and engaging performance’ Richard Leader, host of Leader’s American Pie

'Anna is able to tackle weighty topics with her light, lyricist's hand in a way that makes them easily accessible'. Fatea Magazine

'An extremely accomplished songwriter and performer with lush vocals and a gorgeous rich sound'. Ingenue Magazine

'I love Anna Howie’s singing, songwriting and spirit.  She is a unique storyteller and when you combine that with gorgeous melodies it adds up to much more than 3 chords and the truth .  She has just finished her new EP here in Nashville and its excellent; showing off her UK meets Americana style with an A list of Nashville players.  Already a great live performer. I am looking forward to seeing where her new music takes her' . Mark Cawley - hit songwriter and bestselling author of ‘Song Journey’
