Stephen John Hartley is best known as guitarist in the iconic NOTSENSIBLES, who were well-known on the early Manchester punk scene.
Never straying far from the punk DIY ethic, he’s played in numerous puritan guitar, bass and drums, 3-piece bands. He runs his own back-room label - Eli Records.
He made a living out of busking for five years and developed a passion for growing his own food on his hillside allotment.
He went back to school on the day that his daughter was born and now he’s an A&E consultant at Salford Royal.
Using the annual cycle of the allotment as a framework, he wrote PAINTING SNAILS which brings together the threads of his incredible story into a heart-warming memoir.
He’s joined by his son’s band Nervous Whippet.
