Boo!  It’s 2023!

A new album.

The 30th anniversary of another album.

This year will see the release of “8”, a deluxe remastered re-release of “Giant Steps”, a lot of live performances, including shows this Spring and Summer dedicated to the latter.

Read on to find out more from Tim and Sice.

Tim:
The joy of releasing “Keep On With Falling” after far too many years away, and the positive reception it received from fans, meant we couldn’t resist producing album number 8!  What to call it? Well, “Eight" of course!  The new songs,I believe, are more confident, and they go deeper, and further, to explore musical and lyrical ideas we may have shied away from for "KOWF".

Sice:
Whereas “KOWF" was made up of songs that were written without a specific purpose in mind, this newest album compromises writing that was made purposefully to appear together on an album.  There is also a greater depth of integration, which means that it’s more difficult to tell which member of the band the song originated with.  The name ‘Eight’ was originally a placeholder, but I loved it for several reasons.  Eight has also been my lucky number, and it’s the amount of emotions that I believe are fundamentally experienced by us.

Giant Steps
Tim:
More than anything, I believe "Giant Steps" showed where self-belief could take you. We don’t need them, we can do this ourselves! Thirty years later, I can’t believe the audacity that led to our self-produced third album. A definite thank you to Dick and Mark at Creation, who allowed this to happen. Where there many labels around that time that would have allowed an untested hairy bunch of plastic scousers to produce a record such as this? And I am also grateful that the mistakes we had made previously gave us the push we needed.  17 diverse tracks, on a double gatefold album. My lasting memory of this time was the long, long nights, Kung Po, Bert’s, The Standard, and laughing a lot whilst feeling equally terrified that we wouldn’t pull this off. And cigarettes (piled up on the mixing desk), and alcohol, and hearing loss and tinnitus, and the long-suffering Andy Wilkinson and Giles who were there to serve our every wish. Going home delirious, to start it all over again the next day. Experimentation, very, very dry drums, and a complete lack of self-doubt. And, of course, the confidence and complexity of Martin’s songwriting and ideas. I am delighted that the album has got the re-master it deserves and that it can again be enjoyed in all it’s double vinyl loveliness.

Sice:
So it’s 30 years since this was released.  I don’t like looking back, but, for this, I’ll make an exception.  It was the point where everything kind of came together for us in a way that I don’t believe had happened before.  Personally, it now feels like we were at a point of no return, although we didn’t know it.  We stopped trying to be something else, and allowed ourselves to just be.  It was fantastic to play some of those songs live again last year, and it will be great to play even more when we support the re-release with some live shows.
