Gideon Black is a London based multidisciplinary musician, designer and storyteller who uses these arts to explore recovery, and the vulnerability in belonging. Combining conceptual thinking with emotional candour, he creates immersive environments that invite reflection.
Gideon began his musical life as a jazz drummer and guitarist, playing with the Kent Youth Jazz Orchestra and National Youth Jazz Collective. He later was a founding member of alt funk band Big Teeth, known for its expressive performances and taking their audiences on a journey. Now working under his own name, Gideon creates contemplative alternative folk jazz inspired by Luiz Bonfá, Labi Siffre, ABBA, Rufus Wainwright and Chet Baker. His music combines delicate arrangement and cinematic atmosphere with lyrical sensitivity, drawing from a scale of personal experiences, to Brazilian folklore and Greek myths.
His upcoming project, For Myself and Others, is a concept album and short film shot across the south of France. It traces a journey through convalescence from serious illness, taking a look at how fragility can become a source of connection. The work seeks to start conversations, and provide a space for peaceful reflection.
