Jacky Naylor’s Sextet was formed to premiere Naylor’s ‘Industrial’ Suite, commissioned by Lancaster Jazz Festival in 2019. Raised in West Yorkshire, he wanted to capture different elements of the Industrial Revolution, based on the Wool Mills and Factories of Keighley and Saltaire, the backdrop to his upbringing and family history. Industrial is comprised of 5 sections: Workshop of the World, Wakes Weeks, War of Attrition, The Last Mill and Re-birth.
in 2017, Naylor won the Dankworth Prize for Composition for his debut album ‘Rough Boundaries’, featuring Birmingham Jazz Orchestra. The suite received 4 star reviews from major jazz publications, as well as airtime on JazzFm and Radio 3. In 2016, he graduated from Birmingham Conservatoire with First Class Honours and was a semi finalist in BBC Young Jazz Musician 2015. He received the Barbara Kesterton Award and David Richards Memorial Award to study at The Royal Academy of Music, and is currently a final year Master’s student, studying under the tutelage of Nikki Iles, Kit Downes, Jasper Hoiby and Stan Sulzmann.
