JAWBONE: London might be the only city where a band like Jawbone could exist. The band formed from diametrically opposite corners of the world in 2014 having worked together in various guises in the thriving London music scene, and now embark on promoting their second studio release, Jawbone II released on the 5db label.

Marcus (guitar/vocals) first met Paddy in a north-London flat-share with six other musicians, after spending his early twenties touring the world with different artists. Marcus was born in Camden after his father had moved to London from Italy in 1966 “in search of The Beatles” he never found them and never moved back.

Paddy (keys/vocals) was brought up in Dorset, moved to London to pursue his musical career after realising part way through a physics degree that he would prefer playing piano for a living and be content thinking about astrophysics in his spare time. While the world of physics still mourns this event, the music scene has welcomed it and Paddy has since played with a host of musicians including Tom Jones, Jack Bruce, and Van Morrison.

Rex (bass/vocals) was born in Kalgoorlie, situated in the Western Australian desert, and became a prominent figure on the Australian music scene of the late 80’s and early 90’s. He went on a world tour with his band sometime in the 90’s and forgot to come home, settling in London and becoming a prominent figure on the London music scene.

Evan (drums) originally from New Zealand met Rex at The Conservatoire in Perth where they studied together. He boarded an airplane with a bag of cymbals and a change of clothes one day and arrived in London. He still has the clothes but can’t remember where the cymbals went. Rex and Ev have played together on countless records and in many live situations ever since they reconnected in London years later.

Jawbone tells the story of each and every member but is also greater than the sum of its parts. It is a band that got together for no other reason than to write and play music that made them feel something…something good. The songs take form with Marcus and Paddy round the piano at his E17 London home where the coffee is always on and the neighbours are mostly understanding. The songs are brought into the rehearsal room with Rex and Evan where the ideas start flowing and the trademark three part harmonies are developed.

Influences include: Little Feat, The Beatles, Patto, The Band, Allen Toussaint and CSNY.

As well as their own shows, Jawbone have been the house band for an annual charity show that has seen them perform with Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, Robben Ford, The Yardbirds, Paul Carrack and founder of the event Paul Jones.

For Jawbone II the band went to 5db studios to record in the room like it was a live show. After the absolute minimum of overdubs, mainly because Paddy couldn’t reach the organ from the piano, Javier Weylar mixed the record and brought out the more psychedelic elements. It was mastered in New York by Dave McNair, now you can listen to it and see how you feel too.
