About
Joe Herbert is a London-based jazz guitarist whose music channels raw spirit, compositional clarity, and unfiltered energy into a sound that’s both deeply personal and explosively alive. With a background in modern jazz and a love for the chaotic beauty of combining grunge, ambient textures, and rhythmic intensity, Joe is pushing the limits of the jazz guitar trio - using it as a vessel for honest expression, powerful groove, and responsive improvisation.
His debut album, recorded with his long-standing trio of Toby Yapp (bass) and Josh Walker-Martin (drums), is spontaneous,
unpredictable, and driven by feel. The trio shifts from tight rhythmic drive to wide-open exploration, combining the swagger of Hendrix’s Band of Gypsys, the chromatic playfulness of Monk, the melodic immediacy of new wave, and the improvisational fire of Miles Davis in the 1960s and 70s. Beyond just blurring genres, the goal is to find a consistent attitude - bold, curious, and uncompromising - across all musical reference points.
Rooted in the energy of the London scene, Joe’s playing reflects the spirit of the city: fast-paced, gritty, and alive with possibility. His compositions balance form and freedom, acting as springboards for spontaneous dialogue between three equally present voices. It’s music that treats darkness as a space for play, and restraint as a tool for emotional weight. The result is an unpredictable but coherent sound - grounded in groove and swing, open to expression.
At its core, the project is about freedom, risk, and connection - resisting the overly curated and artificial in favour of something real. In a trio that listens as intently as it plays, Joe finds space to challenge expectations and stretch the language of modern jazz into something raw, honest, and alive.
