The London African Gospel Choir perform their acclaimed interpretation of Paul Simon’s classic record Graceland alongside a collection of their own tunes for an uplifting display of African rhythms and melodies.
After coming across a bootleg cassette of South African township music, Paul Simon travelled to Johannesburg and spent two weeks recording with South African musicians. That session formed the basis of his most commercially successful album, which effortlessly blends pop, rock, zydeco and mbaqanga.
On the 30th anniversary of the album, The Jazz Cafe commissioned London African Gospel Choir to perform the album for one night only. Six sold out shows later and this sensational event is now a regular Camden fixture with re-imaginings of smash synth driven ‘You Can Call Me Al’, haunting acapella Zulu folk song ‘Homeless’ and everything in between.
On the night they’ll also dive into some of their own inspirational recordings, inspired by a hybrid of influences from Congolese guitar and highlife rhythms to South and East African vocal patterns and black American church music.
