About

The Anemone Quartet is a brand new collaboration, featuring four of the most exciting and powerful improvisers on the UK scene, with double bassist Olie Brice; pianist/vocalist Laura Cole; drummer Johnny Hunter; and clarinettist/saxophonist/vocalist Faye MacCalman. The quartet features compositions from each musician, and also draws on free improvisation, photographs, poetry and spoken word.

Olie Brice is a bass player at the forefront of UK improvised music. Olie is a purposeful and energising musician, who works with many of the greatest improvisers in the country, including Paul Dunmall, Alexander Hawkins, Rachel Musson, Evan Parker, Eddie Prevost, Mark Saunders and Jason Yarde, as well as performing at various venues and festivals across Europe. Olie's own quartet featuring Will Glaser, Alexander Hawkins and Rachel Musson released their debut album 'All It Was' in July 2025, and he has also led a trio, quintet and octet, which can be heard on albums including 'Fire Hills' and 'Day After Day'.

Leeds-based pianist, composer and writer Laura Cole is a thoughtful, creative presence on the UK music scene. Recent collaborations include an improvising trio with bassoonist/saxophonist Mick Beck and drummer Emil Karlsen; the Johnny Hunter Quartet (on piano and spoken word); the Pursuance project alongside Charlotte Keeffe, Lara Jones, Faye MacCalman and Walt Shaw; Keith Jafrate’s group Uroboro; and a solo piano Commission responding to the work of artist Mary Griffiths. Laura's latest solo piano/string quartet album, 'Sky Chord/ Haptic Space' - featuring her arrangements of the music of Ron Caines - is out September 2025 on the Discus label.

Enterprising and vibrant composer/drummer Johnny Hunter composes for several ensembles, including the Johnny Hunter Quartet, Pale Blue Dot and Now It Can Be Told, which feature musicians including Mick Bardon, Dee Byrne, Zoe Gilby, Mark Hanslip and Chris Sharkey. Johnny's music has been recorded and broadcast by BBC Radio 3, and he has performed across the country in notable venues and events such as London’s Ronnie Scott’s, Manchester Jazz Festival and Birmingham Jazzlines at Symphony Hall. Johnny's recent recording with pianist Adam Fairhall has rightly received praise from many, including the New York City Jazz Record and Wire magazine.

Newcastle-based Faye MacCalman is a performer, composer-songwriter and improviser on saxophone, clarinet, voice and electronics. She is bandleader of acclaimed jazz art rock adventurers Archipelago, nominated for UK Jazz Act of the Year by Jazz FM, and whose last album ‘Echoes to the Sky’ was selected as one of Jazzwise magazine’s albums of the year. Her time as artist in residence at The Glasshouse ICM sowed the seeds for her debut solo album, scheduled for release in 2026. Fresh off the road from supporting progressive folk artist Richard Dawson on his tour this year, Faye is also collaborating/performing in 2025 with Me Lost Me, Andrew Wasylyk and Liz Corney.
