The True Believers (named after the 1986 Nanci Griffith album “Last of The True Believers”) are an Americana/Country/Folk Band formed in Ladywell, South East London in May 2016.They were formed by satirical stand-up comedian and musician STEVE GRIBBIN, late of Alternative Comedy Stars Skint Video, and now himself a fully established favourite on the live comedy circuit.
They have released one EP on Deptford's Deep River Records called “Calico” and two albums “Songs In The Key Of Heartbreak” in March 2020 and “The Garden Sessions” in March 2023
The band perform their own original songs, written by Steve Gribbin that are all informed by a shared love of Gram Parson's "Cosmic American Music", taking in Folk, Bluegrass, Blues, Gospel, and Cajun.
With their sound led by the heartsore Gram Parsons/Emmylou Harris harmonies of Steve Gribbin and Alice Renouf, The True Believers songs roam freely over a range of styles, from the Cajun song of support for the wave of strikes engulfing the UK “You Will Never Keep Us Down”, to the hard-drivin' Country stomping plea on behalf of refugees “Made It To The Border”, from the funky Country Blues of the defiant “Drivin’ Blind” to the secular Gospel Hallelujah of “Hard To Find”, from the Joni Mitchell/Nick Drake folk song about a love that has stood the test of time “Too Soon To Know” to the Western Swing of true love ballad "Baby, Won't You Hold My Hand?"
The True Believers truly do believe in the spirit and power of Country Music.
